York County History Center
Client/Company: The PRD Group
Project Description: The York County History Center (YCHC) combines the content and stories from five other area museums into a single building. Housed in a historic steam plant, the center features 16,000 square feet of exhibit space in ten topical galleries. After the project had been on and off for four years, PRD and the YCHC team moved forward to complete content development and finalize design in preparation for fabrication. The center celebrated its grand opening in August 2024.
Julie’s Role: Content Developer / Writer
PRD contracted me as content developer and writer. All exhibit areas and general topics had been identified through an earlier design/development process. However, it had been two years since the project had been up and running, and it was unclear exactly what went where. I dove in, conducting detailed research of the county’s history, places, people, and events. Using a previously developed content matrix as a guide, I identified specific stories to feature and laid out an informational hierarchy.
YCHC had a strong desire to ensure that diverse perspectives from the community were represented. While developing the content, this was first and foremost in my mind, as I tried to uncover and prioritize lesser known stories and those of underrepresented communities. I worked closely with the museum’s archivist and collections manager to identify images and objects that best supported these stories. In addition, we consulted with a local content advisory committee, which reviewed content to ensure that major stories were covered and felt representative of the community.
After creating detailed content outlines, I moved into scripting. The museum utilized reading rails as its primary content delivery system, and there were a lot! In total, I wrote text for over 120 rails, graphic panels, and banners as well as some object labels and signs.
