Historic Sun Prairie and
The O’Keeffe Family in Sun Prairie

Client/Company: Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum

Project Description: A year after a nearby gas explosion damaged its building, the Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum reopened to the public with an open house featuring two temporary exhibits. The first told the history and community recollections of the building, the former city library. The second highlighted Sun Prairie’s most famous daughter, artist Georgia O’Keeffe, her upbringing, and artistic influences. These exhibits provided the community with a sneak peek of future offerings.

Julie’s Role: Exhibit Development Consultant / Writer / Graphic Designer

I was commissioned as project manager, writer, and graphic designer to help the understaffed museum create these two temporary exhibits in a very short timeframe…just three weeks! Working with the museum director and a part-time city employee, I helped determine what content would be featured and how it should be displayed. Because of the temporary nature of the exhibition, nothing could be nailed into the walls. We used pre-existing cases to display artifacts from the museum’s collection and movable partitions to hang artwork and text panels. We also determined that printing on retractable banners would allow the museum flexibility to create pop-up exhibits at different locations in the community after the preview event.

Using the staff’s research, I wrote all of the text for the interpretive panels and artifact labels. In addition, I designed all of the graphics for both exhibits. The short production schedule necessitated quick work and, in turn, quick reviews and approvals. After sourcing a printer who could meet the schedule, I facilitated the printing of text panels, artifact labels, and banners. Once we kicked off the project, I was all-in and focused to get the job done well and on time.

Graphic Inspiration

I drew inspiration from Georgia O’Keeffe’s own artwork to create the color palette for the exhibit on her family. For the history of the library building, I used the city’s logo, its sun motif, and bright colors, to inform the graphic design.
