George W. Bush Presidential Museum
Client/Company: Cortina Productions
Project Description: The George W. Bush Presidential Museum is located within the platinum LEED-certified George W. Bush Presidential Center on the Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas, Texas. Through a range of interactive and video exhibits, visitors can learn about President Bush’s principles and policies, getting an in-depth view into his decision-making process. Working closely with the client team, Cortina Productions designed, developed, and produced a wide range of exhibits, including A Charge to Keep signature theater film, Ten Days film, Defending Freedom interactive table, and the Decision Points Theater interactive experience.
Julie’s Role: Project Manager / Producer
I served as the project manager for the production of all media within the George W. Bush Presidential Museum, which included 22 interactive exhibits, 12 films, and an audio exhibit. I also spearheaded a handheld mobile app project, featuring General, Kids, and ADA descriptive audio tours in English and Spanish. As the key client contact, I led the team from conception to completion.
As with many high-profile museum projects, it was a lengthy process, taking us nearly four years to complete. During the preproduction stage, Cortina Productions formed a small internal team, of which I was a part, to generate ideas and develop concepts. I collaborated with another writer to flesh out these ideas, research the stories, and write outlines to present to the client along with a graphic look and feel.
We rolled right into production, where I continued my project management role, supervising and directing a team of nearly forty, coordinating video shoots including an interview I conducted with President and Mrs. Bush, and facilitating reviews with the client. However, I didn’t want to give up the creative side, so I produced several pieces, including the introductory theater experience. Through personal interviews, A Charge To Keep signature film reveals the principles that drive President and Mrs. Bush in both their personal and political lives. These first-person accounts, accompanied by archival imagery and footage, highlight how these principles and beliefs in areas such as opportunity, compassion, service, and freedom shape their actions, while providing insight into their relationships with each other and their family. Although a large-scale film in a theater setting, it has an intimate feel with an original music score and surround sound to enhance the story and emotional impact.
