The George Washington University
Bicentennial Documentary Film Series
Client/Company: The George Washington University / FLOWSTATE Films
Project Description: The George Washington University in collaboration with FLOWSTATE Films produced a special documentary film series celebrating GW’s bicentennial year in 2021. Through ten short films, the series highlights the uniqueness of the GW experience. The project ran for nearly two years, beginning at the end of 2019. The first film, narrated by Kerry Washington, premiered at an online celebration exactly 200 years after the university was chartered. Subsequent films launched on a monthly basis. The project culminated in a public campus film festival featuring all of the films.
Julie’s Role: Project Manager / Associate Producer
I served as the project manager to help facilitate a complex process with a diverse team. Our team included internal leadership from the university’s Marketing & Creative Services department, internal production/post-production staff, an external production company, and additional contractors as needed. It was a difficult time as the pandemic hit just as we were in the middle of original shooting. We tried to wait it out, but when we realized our long-term situation, our team pivoted. Some films were cancelled, and new stories emerged. It was challenging juggling numerous films at various stages of production. We embraced video calls and worked together to create films of which I’m really proud.
In addition to my project management role, I assisted with scripting for the Election 2020 film and was responsible for quality control of all the films. Because of my musical background, I coordinated with a composer who produced original scores for all of the films, providing feedback and helping facilitate client review. For GW’s Bicentennial Celebration, FLOWSTATE Films produced two more films, for which I assisted on a short turnaround.
